Dear Dr. Love,I am a 22-year old, married woman. I was a virgin until marriage. The first time my husband and I had sex, my hymen broke. I started bleeding very badly. That same day, I started my period. It scared me.Should I be worried? After my period, the second time we had sex, I bled again. I didn’t understand it that time. It really scared me. Can you please help me?Thank you.
It is not uncommon for a woman to bleed when her hymen is broken. And, it is also possible that your hymen wasn’t fully broken during the first intercourse episode, so that when you had sex the second time it tore some more and you bled again. What I think you need to do is to go to your gynecolgist and get a check-up. Your doctor can take a peek and confirm whether or not a part of your hymen still remains intact. If this is confirmed, then you won’t feel so worried when you bleed.Whenever a woman bleeds after intercourse it is good to get checked out. Bleeding can also be caused by too rough sex, a sign of an infection, or, for older women, a symptom of tissue erosion due to low estrogen levels. This isn’t your case, I’m sure. But, you will want to make sure that you have no infections present. If you do have an infection, no need to freak out. You will treat the problem, and be back in the ‘saddle’again in no time.Check yourself out, and be cool.
